Playing with an untamed force

Japan is on the verge of major catastrophe of unknown proportions. The day when the Tsunami entered coastal towns and villages, annihilated whole communities, destroyed homes, lives, families, we saw another disaster in the Horizon : Fukishima, Daiichi Nuclear plant.

Since then, several explosions have rocked the plant, we all saw the powerful blasts on TV, CNN, NHK, and elsewhere. What we did not see was the brutal impact this has on the local community, the firefighters, workers, fishermen, employees of the plant and those living nearby.

Each of the safety measures, as in most such scenarios, had failed. According to Murphy’s law, when things can go wrong, they will. In Fukishima, normal life will not return for a long time to come. We must understand that authorites will not be able to annouce each detail, and not all severity for fear of panic. Evacuation of the population around 30 km has already been completed, however my fear is, there will be further evacuations.

What must be asked is how is this possible. By asking we should be able to get some answers, or won’t we? Question : Who was the manufacturer of the plant. When we look at the close proximity to the sea, knowing Japans history with Tsunamis and earthquakes, we should be expecting such incidents. If we assume, that Tsunamis and earthquakes will not rise to unprecedented levels, and try and safe in design costs, we act immature.  Japan had many Tsunamis in the past, well documented.

Similarily, earthquakes were recorded for centuries. Now, we “assume” and believe that both Tsunamis, and earthquakes will “behave” in a certain manner,  to our liking. The odd one will teach us a lesson. And we have unleashed a force, over which humans have no control over. We think we are allmighty, we have the ‘knowledge’, yet – we don’t. Scholars, scientists, Engineers, Technicians have to watch helplessly to see the full scale of this disaster unfolding right in front of their eyes, unable to tame it.

Playing with untamed forces of nature, we have reached uncharted territory which well could proof a disaster of unknown magnitude. What remains unanswered is, after the tragedies of Hiroshima, and Nagasaki, how could the Japanese population consent to the use of Nuclear power on their Island? Economic development is a factor, but more so, I believe is greed driven.

Noone said it more clear than the one who should know best, for he was directly  involved when the first major nuclear disaster hit Chernobyl, Iouli Andreev.

His words :

Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

After Chernobyl all the force of the nuclear industry was directed to hide this event, for not creating damage to their reputation. The Chernobyl experience was not studied properly because who has money for studying? Only industry.

“But industry doesn’t like it,” he said in an interview in Vienna where the former director of the Soviet Spetsatom clean-up agency now teaches and advises on nuclear safety. Austria’s environment ministry has used him as an adviser.

Andreev said a fire which released radiation on Tuesday involving spent fuel rods stored close to reactors at Fukushima looked like an example of putting profit before safety:

“The Japanese were very greedy and they used every square inch of the space. But when you have a dense placing of spent fuel in the basin you have a high possibility of fire if the water is removed from the basin,” Andreev said.  continued :  louli andreev

We can argue over his statement, and over responsibility, there will be investigations, committees, findings. Question remains : How will the Japanese people get over this massive disaster. These questions only time can answer.

What is left for Japan and the world to do is to pray.
