This awesome place is located in Burgenland
Ever since becoming a Local guide for Google I have taken lots of effort to display and record some of the places we visit.
Some of the photos enclosed will give you a glimpse into Winter in Austria. This one in Burgenland.
We still have tons of stored footage which we intend to publish. However for today we enclose some photos from Winter and a video showing New years celebrations.
An annual event where local folks gather up the hill around midnight to welcome the Newyear among friends and bonfires, Champagne and hot mull-wine.
DRINKING MULL WINE AND LISTEN TO JOHANN STRAUSS
In this remote town , which I believe can be compared to a remote Appalachian trail town people gather once a year to celebrate New Year s eve whilst listening to the sound of Johann Strauss ‘ Blue Danube ‘.
The one time when people feel free and loosen up by the effects of Champagne and hot wine is a rare occasion. Normally people in this community – as well as others far away from the city – folks tend to be very reserved.
Winter in Burgenland is harsh. When the wind blows from the close Hungarian plate temperatures can fall into the low minus 20 degrees C. So gathering up on the mountain at midnight can be quiet tough and requires some compromises, wine or no.
When folks then gather and have their first mug of hot wine drink, it takes off their inhibitions.
In fact my wife felt so cold that the next morning the neighbor presented her graciously with a complete Fur coat made of martens skins. This coat served as a protection from the freezing weather. Fortunately or not – my wife took it along to Nice in the South of France where it is stored safely till the next cold weather breaks.
