Jeff Dahn has been studying lithium-ion for decades.
The battery is one of the inventors of laptops and mobile phone batteries that we can see everywhere now.

When publishing a report, people will pay close attention to it. When I read the report myself, I found something that surprised me.
This new battery component causes the battery almost no degradation.
Over time, a much better discharge cycle can be achieved than with a general lithium-ion battery.
On a common lithium-ion battery, usually in 1,000 charge and discharge cycles, the capacity of the battery will degrade from 100% to 0% to reach 1,000-2,000 cycles.
This is considered to be a very good service life.
New performance level
Dahn’s research shows that the new lithium-ion battery still maintains more than 95% of its original capacity after 1,000 charge-discharge cycles.
Compare them with the lithium-ion batteries currently on the market.
After testing, after 1,000 charge and discharge cycles, the remaining capacity is only 50%.
New battery performance surprise
Even after 4,000 charges, the battery still shows 90% capacity. That is a little crazy.
The excellent temperature resistance of the new battery is another factor which surprised me.
We all know that batteries don’t like extreme temperatures because that will affect battery performance.
This will also affect the overall battery life.
Tests have shown that the new battery is more resistant to temperature at 40°C (104°F).
The report clearly states that “the chemistry of the battery pack is also stable at high temperatures.”
It does sound convincing that the newest type of battery is what we want to get, right?
Yes, but not exactly… There are some details here that are not for us. It can be seen that in fact, there are two things worth mentioning.
First, the tested formula is 5 parts Nickel, 3 parts manganese and 2 parts cobalt NMC batteries – are very common.
Our mobile phones, laptops, power tools, and even some electric vehicles are using this component battery.
These are very effective components of a battery’s formula.
It has reliable properties but the energy density of the new battery tested is only 200 Wh/kg.
At present, the energy density of the batteries used in Mоdеl 3 has reached about 250 Wh/kg.
Life cycle shortened
The new component NMC battery can reach a life of 1,000,000 miles, its energy density is lower than that of the current NCA battery used by Mоdеl 3, so the battery life will be shortened.
The gap between them is just like the ordinary version of 260 miles in Model 3.
The second thing that surprised me with the long endurance version of 310 miles is the cobalt content of the new NMC battery exceeds Tesla’s current battery.
You should have heard about the problem of cobalt mining.
Cobalt mining is very dangerous work.
Most of the cobalt mines on earth are in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the cobalt mines themselves are very rare.
As a result the price of cobalt is very expensive. Tesla and other companies have been trying to reduce battery dependence on cobalt.
Musk and his team have been talking about this on the quarterly conference call.
JB: “You know, reduce the use of cobalt. This is the goal we have been working on…” “This idea has been in existence for at least several years.
And…” “This is very helpful to control the total cost” “especially the recent trend of raw material prices (always rising).
“I think we can control the amount (price) of cobalt mining, but (without cobalt words) is a good trend.”
Musk: “We think we can bring the cobalt content to almost zero.”
New batteries have increased Cobalt contents
The new NMC battery increases the amount of cobalt.
Will Tesla still use this battery? The answer is probably not.
This new battery does not meet Tesla’s stated goals.
They are committed to reducing or even eliminating instead of increasing cobalt content in batteries.
In addition they are also attempting to reduce the cost of manufacturing battery packs, which in turn makes cars more affordable.
Cobalt in is very expensive. If you use a new type of battery pack, the price will increase by $ 400-$ 500. This is also inconsistent with Tesla’s goal.
This only solves a small part of the puzzle.
We should not expect this new type of battery to be the battery to be used in the next few years.
It may be very suitable for Tesla’s super electric energy storage system, without being limited by size and cost.
New type of Nano coating
But that does’t sound like the final answer.
The report showed some key findings, that is, a new type of nano-scale coating technology around the battery cathode.
