In July 1928, Empress Dowager Cixi and Qianlong’s mausoleum was blasted open, by a smallpox distorted faced man. He hacked open the coffin lid, stripped Empress Dowager Cixi of her pants, dumped the body on the ground, and smashed Qianlong’s head.
East window after the incident, raised his neck and said: “Manqing killed my ancestors for three generations, had to revenge the Revolution, for the worth of our ancestors!”
The pockmarked man, Sun Dianying, grew up poor and hated the Qing government. His father was beaten to death by officials for trivial matters only.
Born into a bad family, when ten years old, he started drinking, gambling, and became proficient in many trades.
Gambling put him into prison, he got to know the Greenwood Hero Jiao Wendian, with the help of Jiao, he managed a smooth enlistment in the military.
First he defected to Zhang Zongchang, the“Dog meat general”, and later to Zhang Zuolin, both belonged to different political factions.
By 1928, the Fengshi Army was losing ground in China. Sun Dianying surrendered. He accepted Chiang Kai-shek’s call to surrender, and became commander of the Zero TH Army of the Sixth Corps.
In June 1928, Sun Dianying arrived in Dongling on orders to suppress bandits there.
The cemetery located there is home to 161 people, including five emperors, 15 empresses, 136 concubines, three elder brothers and two princesses.
The Qing dynasty had fallen, and there were no more troops left to guard the cemetery, giving Sun Dianying an opportunity of a lifetime.
In the dead of the night, Sun Dianying came swaggering in with his men and their dynamite packs.
The cold wall of steel was vulnerable to explosives, it was considered impregnable.
Finally they came to Empress Dowager Cixi’s coffin, yet all could not open the coffin.
Sun Dianying swung his axe straight at the lid of the coffin and struck it until it broke into several pieces.
The coffin was opened at last, and the body was not yet putrefied. Empress Dowager Cixi’s face was fair, but his eyes were like bells. Sun Dianying cried out in terror, and backed away. After some time he uttered: “We do not need to be afraid of the dead!”
They were still frightened, all gathered round the coffin, and saw Empress Dowager Cixi with a night-shining pearl in her mouth, and all the treasures lying around her.
They picked the pearl from Empress Dowager Cixi’s mouth, always thinking Empress Dowager Cixi should have something more precious.
They dragged Empress Dowager Cixi Empress Dowager Cixi out of the coffin. Her dragon robe was torn apart, her phoenix crest crushed under his feet, her underwear ripped off, and her hair, eyes, mouth and body were groped for more treasures.
After ransacking Empress Dowager Cixi’s tomb, Sun Dianying immediately ordered his men to blow up Qianlong’s tomb. Qianlong’s body had decomposed, leaving only bones and braids.
The most precious thing in the mausoleum is a string of prayer beads on Qianlong’s neck, a total of 108, a sword of the nine dragons, and one of the beads fell into the late Emperor’s skull. In order to get the beads, sun Dianying smashed Qianlong’s skull.
On this trip, Sun Dianying took 20 wagons full of treasure.
When Dongling was stolen, the world was in an uproar, especially Puyi. When he heard Dongling had been raided and the treasures stolen, he beat his chest and cried, “I’m not done with you.”.
Pu Yi went straight to Chiang Kai-shek and demand that Sun Dianying be severely punished.
But Sun Dianying was as steady as a rock, and under the direction of his boss, Xu Yuanquan, he began to move further up his career.
‘First, I gave the sword he stole to my boss, Chiang Kai-shek’ he said.
And gave the largest of the 108 beads to Dai Li.
Empress Dowager Cixi’s watermelon tourmaline pillow, given to T. V. Soong.
The Pearl in Empress Dowager Cixi’s mouth went to Soong May-ling.
$500,000 worth of gold went to Yan Xishan.
……
So the case went on from 1928 to 1929 without Sun Dianying’s conviction.
The scandalous Dongling tomb raiding case just went away.
Sun Dianying remained at large for more than 20 years.
Qianlong was arrogant in life, but after his death, his bones were thrown into the gutter. It had become a tragic event in history. A sad experience, no matter what.
